The Borgo

The Doors

The inferior entry to the suburb was situated through the called place “The Doors”, because there was a defensive complex with various doors and towers. In 1905 to make space for aroad on the left side of the door there is the nuns of seclusion’s building that has been in installed for entertaining his sisters that the Devoted Margherita Antoniazzi had picked up in a monastery of Coast Geminiana (Bardi). The church of motto convent has been demolished with the external boundaries in the 1905.

The inferior road

Along the road on the left there is one I broaden due to the collapse and then demolition of a house verificated in 1900 around; in the last decades have been situated various commemorative plates. However it can be called “Piazzetta of the Remembrances.”
In front of the piazzetta an inn named “Inn of the Principality” was opened and it entertained many visitors of Completes for twenty years in which there was a bloom again of the suburb. Always in front of the piazzetta to the civic 12 there was a convent of the monks of which none of the documents has remained. In fact the back tower situated on the west boundaries it is called “the monks’ Tower.”

The Plaza

To the peak of the road there is the principal plaza it is situated on the south slope of the country. The principal building that leans out on the plaza has been built at the end of the 1700 by Giovan Battista Red, rich man. On a side of the plaza there is the parish church devoted to St. Giovanni Battista.

The Door of Compianino

In front of the church there is the “Hands of Compianino”, east access of the suburb.
The name Compianino derives from the fact that the hill set of forehead obstructed the sight of the road that originated from Borgotaro; therefore on the aforesaid hill it was made a called fortification Compianino.

The Town hall

From the plaza climbing toward the castle is found on the right the Town hall that was center of the “Magnificent community of Compiano” that it governed an ample territory constituted by the actual common of Compiano and from the neighboring commons.
At the ground floor of the town hall there were the jails for civil common crimes of competence of the “Magnificent community” while the most serious crimes and “political” they were of competence of the Prince and the relative jails they were in the castle.

San Rocco’s oratory

After the Town hall there is the oratory that was seat of the  “Confraternita dei Disciplinati” established in XVI century. In 1886 here was located a big Marco Rossi Sidoli’s memorial. Later, this memorial was transferred in retirement home’s garden. After the oratory there is the door that took in Piazza della Cisterna.


More than principal streets there were carob, two were parallel at the inferior road of which one placed along the west walls, and three, close and long, connected inferior streets and higher streets.
